Sharing Office Space in Glasgow: Floor or Private Room?

Most people who start looking into sharing office space near them are solving one of two problems. Either the house has stopped working as an office, or the business has outgrown the kitchen table and needs somewhere clients can actually visit.
Both problems point you at the same two options, and they are not the same thing. One is a communal workspace where you take a desk on an open floor. The other is a shared private office, where two or three businesses split a lockable room. People use "sharing an office" to mean both, which is why the search results feel like they're answering a different question from the one you asked.
Here's how to tell which one you need, and what each one actually commits you to.
What people mean by sharing an office
There are two setups in Glasgow, and the difference is the door.
The communal workspace floor
You work in an open space alongside other members. You share the WiFi, the kitchen, the printer and the lounge. Depending on the membership, you either take any free desk each morning or keep the same one permanently, which is what a dedicated desk gives you. You're sharing a building and a community, not a room with one specific company. Your agreement is with the workspace operator only, so nobody else's business decisions change what you pay.
The shared private office
Two or three small businesses take one lockable office together and split the cost. You share the room itself. This works when the businesses already know each other, like an accountant and a bookkeeper, or two founders who met at a networking night. It also means one of you usually holds the agreement and invoices the other, which makes it a commercial relationship, not just a desk arrangement.
At Our HQ, the first is the coworking floor and the second is a private office that members sometimes split between themselves.

What office space sharing costs, and what sits under the headline number
Office space sharing is cheaper than a lease because you're not paying for the parts you don't use, like a reception you never staff or a meeting room that sits empty four days a week. You're also not buying the things a lease makes you buy before you open the door: furniture, cabling, a fit-out, and a dilapidations bill at the end of it.
At Our HQ, a day pass is £18, coworking membership starts at £99 a month, a dedicated desk with lockable storage is £149, and a private office starts at £265. WiFi, utilities, kitchen and breakout access come included. Private office members also get 40% off the four meeting rooms. We've broken the full numbers down, including what other Glasgow providers charge, in our guide to what shared workspace costs in 2026.
Three things worth asking any provider, because they're rarely on the pricing page:
Is that figure before or after VAT? Flexible workspace is usually quoted excluding it. Check which number you're comparing.
Is there a deposit, and how much? Private rooms often take one month up front. Communal memberships usually don't.
What notice do you need to give? Monthly rolling isn't the same as leaving tomorrow. Know the number before you need it.
If you're splitting a private room with another business, you save per head but you take on shared exposure. Agree who holds the agreement, how the cost splits, who covers the month if one of you leaves, and whose insurance covers the equipment in the room. Put it in writing before you move in, not after the first awkward month.
Noise, calls and privacy in a communal office
This decides it for more people than cost does.
A communal office is sociable by design. You'll hear conversations, keyboards, and the occasional laugh from the kitchen. If your day is back-to-back client calls, that's a problem on an open floor unless there are phone booths, which we have. If your day is heads-down work with two or three calls in it, the floor is fine, and most people stop noticing the background inside a fortnight.
A shared private office gives you a door, but only against everyone else. You still hear the business you're sharing with, all day, every day. If one of you is on the phone constantly and the other needs quiet, that pairing fails fast, and it's awkward to unpick because you're both on the same room.
Confidential work settles it. Legal, medical, financial, HR, or anything under a client NDA needs a room you control on your own. Don't try to make an open floor work for that, and think twice about a shared room too, because the other business is within earshot of every call.
Using communal office space in Glasgow as your work base
A lot of people searching for a communal office are solving an address problem as much as a desk problem. They don't want a home address on the website, on invoices, or on the business card.
Our HQ sits at 24 Fairley Street, Glasgow G51 2SN. That's a recognised commercial postcode rather than a residential one, in the Clyde corridor, with Pacific Quay about ten minutes' walk away. If you need post handled or a formal registered address as well as a desk, ask us directly, because that isn't automatically part of a desk membership anywhere, and the answer varies by provider.
Should you share an office or take your own room?
Go communal if you're a freelancer or remote worker, you want people around you, your costs need to stay low and flexible, and you can work with background noise.
Go shared private if there are two to four of you, you take calls constantly, you have equipment you'd rather leave out overnight, or clients come to you.
Go private on your own if the work is confidential, the team is growing month on month, or you've tried sharing and found the other business's rhythm doesn't match yours.
You can also move between them, and most people should. A month on the coworking floor tells you more about what you need than any amount of reading. Most of our private office members started on the floor.
What to check before you commit
Contract length and notice period. Monthly rolling means you can change your mind. Twelve months means you can't, whatever the brochure says about flexibility.
What's genuinely included. Printing, meeting room hours, post, and after-hours access are the four that usually sit outside the headline price. At Our HQ, printing and scanning are charged separately, so you only pay for what you use.
Desk availability at 10am on a Tuesday. An office space share only works if there's a free desk when you arrive. Ask what the busiest day looks like.
Who else is in the building. If you want referrals and introductions, the mix of members matters as much as the chair does.
The commute at 8:30am, not at lunchtime. Visit at the hour you'd actually arrive, on the route you'd actually take.
Parking, and what it costs. City centre spaces rarely have any, and you pay daily for the privilege. There's free on-street parking around Fairley Street.
Sharing office space near you in Glasgow
Our HQ is at 24 Fairley Street, G51 2SN, three minutes' walk from Ibrox Subway. That puts Buchanan Street roughly twelve minutes away door to door, with the West End and the South Side just as straightforward. Govan is a stop away, Pacific Quay is a ten-minute walk, and the SEC and Hydro are about fifteen minutes on foot.
That's city centre connectivity without the city centre premium, which for most small teams is the difference between affording a hire and affording a postcode.
Come and see the floor before you decide. A tour takes twenty minutes and nothing is attached to it. Or try the space for £18 with a day pass, no booking needed. Book a tour, or look at the coworking memberships and private offices first.
FAQ
What does sharing office space actually mean?
It means working from a space you don't lease on your own. In practice that's either a communal floor where you take a desk among other members, or a private room you split with another business. Both include WiFi, utilities, kitchen and building access in one monthly fee.
Is sharing an office cheaper than renting my own?
Usually. You're splitting the cost of the building, the internet, the cleaning and the furniture across everyone using it. At Our HQ, membership starts at £99 a month compared with the deposit, fit-out and long commitment a traditional Glasgow lease asks for.
Can two businesses share one private office?
Yes, and it's common among small teams. Agree in advance how the cost splits, who holds the agreement with the workspace, and what happens if one of you leaves. Our team can talk you through how other members have arranged it.
Is a communal office too noisy for client calls?
It depends on the volume of calls. Occasional calls are fine, especially where phone booths are available, and ours are. If you're on calls most of the day, a private office is the better fit.
Can I try a communal workspace before committing?
Yes. A day pass at Our HQ is £18 and needs no booking. Walk in on any working day and see whether the floor suits how you work.
Where can I find office space sharing near me in Glasgow?
Our HQ is on Fairley Street in G51, three minutes' walk from Ibrox Subway and around twelve minutes from the city centre. It's reachable from the West End, the South Side, Govan and Pacific Quay, with free on-street parking nearby.
Is there a long contract?
Memberships and offices at Our HQ run on flexible monthly terms with no setup fees. Ask about the notice period when you tour, so you know it before you need it.
